Their translations of Greco Roman classics gave knowledge to Western scholars that was thought lost. They challenged the traditional Church and usually held beliefs. Ficinos translation of Platos writings from the traditional authoritative into Latin gave Western scholars their first chance to read the classical philosopher since the fall of Rome. It was based on his translations and his generous benefactor Cosimo de Medici that the Platonic Academy was born.
